A deep magenta, dark at cone 05.
It becomes patchy at cone 5 before burning out almost completely at cone 10. A clear glaze accentuates the colour at cone 05, but at cone 5 and cone 10 there is no colour change between glazed and unglazed. Velvet is AMACO's underglaze line, and it behaves more like a colour than a glaze: opaque, true to the colour in the jar, and fine enough to hold detailed brushwork. It goes onto wet clay, leather-hard clay, greenware or cone 04 bisque (1063°C / 1945°F), so the decoration can happen at whatever stage suits the piece. The line fires anywhere from cone 05 to cone 10, and left bare it finishes as the soft matte it is named for. It goes on 3 to 4 brush coats, and it is approved for spray application and for layering. On food surfaces AMACO is specific: an underglaze is not food safe on its own, and becomes food safe only when a food-safe clear glaze is fired over it. Worth firing a test tile with a new batch, as raw materials vary. Select colours are also available in gallons.
