UP001 is the yellow in the Chrysanthos underglaze pencil range. An underglaze pencil draws on bisque the way a pencil draws on paper, which makes it the tool for line and lettering rather than area - signatures, dates, drawn detail, hatching and shading. Sponge the first coat: Chrysanthos describes the range as only mostly smudge-proof, and a sponged first pass fixes it. After that, brush a couple of coats or dip. Wet the tip for a more solid line, and it mixes, smudges and blends deliberately when you want it to. The range fires from cone 06 (999°C) to cone 10 (1,305°C); colour fades the higher you fire, though Chrysanthos states most colours hold true to cone 10. On food surfaces the condition is specific: an underglaze pencil is food safe only with a clear glaze fired over it, not on its own. Conforms to ASTM D 4236 and is lead free.
