The blue sponge is the general-purpose one, cut to a rib profile so it sits flat against a wall instead of bunching in the hand. Open cells take water up quickly and give it back under light pressure.
The reason to choose a manufactured pop-up sponge over natural sea sponge is repeatability: one blue sponge behaves like the next, and a sea sponge does not. Mudtools make them from a biodegradable material rather than natural sponge. Dyed with a natural pigment, so the colour fades with use.
