The white sponge has the tightest cell structure of the three, so grit stays on the surface rather than lodging in it. That is what makes it a finishing sponge: it wipes a leather-hard or bisque surface without dragging picked-up grog back across the work.
It fills much the same role as a chamois and does not need wringing out to behave. Mudtools make them from a biodegradable material rather than natural sponge.
