Frit 3124 is a calcium borosilicate frit — soda, calcium, boron, alumina and silica melted to glass and ground back to powder, so fluxes that would dissolve in the glaze water stay put. It carries its own alumina, and on its own it is close to a balanced glaze.
The alumina in Frit 3124 stiffens the melt and holds a glaze where it is put, so the frit can go into a recipe in quantity without running. On its own it is close to a balanced glaze: a tenth to a fifth of its weight in kaolin gives a low-fire clear, and a little silica as well takes it to cone 6. It fuses around 870°C and flows around 950°C. Its thermal expansion is low enough to fit most clay bodies, and there is a lot of calcium in it, which shifts browns and iron colours.
