Alberta Slip is an iron-bearing slip clay that carries enough flux to melt into a glaze largely on its own from about cone 6 up. It is blended from several raw materials rather than being one clay.
Alberta Slip melts on what it already holds, a heavy flux load in a fine clay, with iron colouring the result and adding to the melt under reduction. Fired to cone 10 by itself it gives a rich brown in oxidation and goes to tenmoku in reduction. Lower down it wants a little added flux to bring it into range, and with that help it works through the middle of the range as well as the top. It also goes into other glazes in smaller amounts, where it brings colour and melt in one addition rather than one or the other.
